- TWO GUYS, ONE OBSESSION - Established 2006 | Sonoma County,
California Issue Number 4 | Spring 2012

Welcome to Joseph Jewell Wines Spring Release

We are very excited to offer you three wines this spring!

Two of the featured wines are phenomenal Pinot Noirs from the 2009
vintage. Both Pinots exhibit the Joseph Jewell style of elegance and
balance. The intensity and bright clarity of these two Pinots deliver
a delicate balance with rich, fine-grained tannins. The silky
texture of these well-structured wines is a tribute to the phenomenal
2009 vintage.

The third wine is a Chardonnay 2011 vintage from Shiloh Hill Vineyard
(our first Chardonnay). This wine is driven by minerality with
smooth supple textures serving up the lemon and apples notes. We
crafted this wine in traditional Chablis style which includes
fermentation in stainless steel tanks to allow more of the
Chardonnay’s true colors to shine. This distinctive style Chardonnay
is brisk and refreshing in contrast to the typical oak fermented
Chardonnays which tend to be buttery and heavy on the oak.

2009 Joseph Jewell Pinot Noir Floodgate Vineyard Russian River Valley on TV Tuesday

Lets start this post out by saying I died and went to Pinot Heaven! Tonight on Cellars of Sonoma TV Tuesday we had the pleasure of tasting Joseph Jewell’s Floodgate Vineyard Pinot while chatting with owner/winemaker Adrian Manspeaker (yes you too Scott Jordan). Present and accounted for where bloggers Dezel Quillen, Jodi Fritch and Shawn Burgert my colleagues from VA, FL and CA.

Joseph Jewell wines created by 2 very good friends in (drumroll) a garage no less. 2006 the year Micah “Joseph” Wirth and Adrian “Jewell” Manspeaker purchased a ton of pinot grapes, 2 french barrels and small basket press to produce their first vintage of 50 cases. Driven by a passion for making great wine, friends with empty glasses ready to critique the finished product, the wine was a huge hit. Six years later and going strong, the two are producing wines scored above 90. The fruit is sourced from vineyards Floodgate, Redwood Ranch, Grist, Elk Prairie, and Appian Way. Micah and Adrian work closely with the vineyard owners having built a firm relationship with the growers. What this means for you and I is quality grapes in every bottle of juice. Production includes Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose of Pinot and the wine they are still most passionate with (and my favorite or they wouldn’t call me Miles) Pinot Noir.

How was the wine you ask? Revert to paragraph 1 line 1 “heaven”. The moment the cork was removed and pouring commenced, ripe cherry with cola notes scream from the glass. Bright fruit and so aromatic. Cinnamon spice with hints of clove, strawberry and cranberry as you continue to sniff and swirl. Normally on an RRV Pinot earthy mushroom is huge yet on this one it was so subtle I almost missed the aroma. Beautifully done gentlemen. By the way readers, the Floodgate Vineyard is located in the Russian River Valley next to the Mark West Creek. Each year the flat areas of the vineyard flood hence the name. This just became another of my “favorite” vineyards.

Amazing Pinot Noir. Fresh cherry, strawberry and cranberry to start off your tasting pleasure. Towards the middle of the taste here comes the spice combination which compliments the fruit but doesn’t overpower. The finish is long and juicy with a slight hint of earthy oak. I can taste your passion in every sip. Silky and so elegant. Bravo!

Scott you were spot on with this selection. Folks check out Santa Rosa’s favorite stop for great wine and entertainment Cellars of Sonoma
Adrian great answers to all the questions. Learned alot about the wines this evening and my compliments to you and Micah. For those wanting to learn more about them visit their website Joseph Jewell Wines

13 California Pinot Noirs

New reviews of impressive Pinots from Sonoma and Santa Barbara
MaryAnn Worobiec
Posted: February 13, 2012

Tasting Highlights bring the best wines from our editors’ most recent tastings to WineSpectator.com members.

The 2009 Pinot Noirs from California continue to impress, and we’re also getting more of a sneak peek at the 2010s in our tastings, such as the wines from Pali featured this week. Pinot Noir does well in many different parts of California, but this week the focus is on Sonoma and Santa Barbara.

Joseph Jewell is a new brand that stood out this week; its name is an amalgamation of the middle names of the two founders, Micah Joseph Wirth and Adrian Jewell Manspeaker. These two friends and partners are sourcing grapes for their wine from vineyards in Sonoma and elsewhere; this Russian River bottling is a blend of three vineyards and five different Pinot Noir clones. This is a brand to watch.

Pali has been on our radar screen since its debut with the 2005 vintage, and the 2010 Huntington bottling is an amazing value, a delicate Pinot Noir with plenty of finesse for only $21. And check out the trio of Pinot Noirs from Emeritus. Brice Cutrer Jones, who previously founded the well-known Sonoma-Cutrer brand, founded the brand Emeritus based on the grapes from two estate vineyards. Emeritus is becoming known for distinctive Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Pinots.

JOSEPH JEWELL Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2009 Score: 91 | $33

Intense and concentrated, with a tight beam of dried berry, forest floor, mushroom and red licorice, firming and ending with tannins that give this traction. Drink now through 2020. 125 cases made. —J.L.

Joseph Jewell Wines

The 2009 Pinot Noirs reviewed below were my first introduction to this young winery. I was attracted to the style which is one of balance, finesse, modest alcohols, and welcoming pinotosity. I can see plenty of Gary Farrell influence in these wines. Highly inviting now, the Joseph Jewell Pinot Noirs are easy to drink and sensibly priced.

2009 Joseph Jewell Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.9% alc., pH 3.54, TA 0.57, 125 cases $33. Hallberg, Floodgate and Appian Way vineyards. Clones 115, 667, 777, and Pommard 4 and 5. 100% de-stemmed. Aged 10 months in 20% new Francois Frères French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Aromas of dark cherries and berries, oak, and a little funk. Moderately intense, earth-kissed dark stone fruit and cherry cola juicy flavors wrapped in supple tannins. Well-crafted but flavors don’t excite. Decent.

2009 Joseph Jewell Appian Way Vineyards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.6% alc., pH 3.47, TA 0.65, 125 cases, $45. The 2-acre Appian Way Vineyard is located just outside the town of Forestville and was planted in 2001 on a former organic apple orchard site. The clones are 115, 777 and Pommard, rooted in Goldridge soil. Tom and Kelly Keegan are the owners. 100% de-stemmed. Aged 10 months in 20% new Francois Frères French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. A highly nuanced perfume jumps out of the glass with scents of black cherries, nutmeg, baking spice and leaf. Tasty black cherry core with a modest attack, finishing short with a slight floral undertone. The tannins are dry, firm and reserved, and the wine is easy to drink. Good (+).

2009 Joseph Jewell Floodgate Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.8% alc., pH 3.42, TA 0.62, 250 cases, $42. Floodgate Vineyard is owned by Hambrecht Vineyards and farmed by Warren Burton. The name comes from its location next to Mark West Creek which floods every year and submerges the flat areas of the vineyard. This wine is sourced from three different blocks and includes clones 777, 667 and 115. 100% de-stemmed. Aged 10 months in 30% new Francois Frères and Rousseau French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple hue in the glass. Enticing aromatics featuring scents of dark red cherries and berries, exotic timber, and spice. Discreetly concentrated flavors of red stone fruits and red berries with accents of brown spice, fruit leather and herbs. Silky on the palate with well-mannered and supportive dusty tannins. Very good.

2009 Joseph Jewell Elk Prarie Vineyard Humboldt County Pinot Noir

13.9% alc., pH 3.39, TA 0.63, 100 cases, $39. The vineyard sits at 1,200 feet on Fruitland Ridge. Yields were 1.75 tons per acre. 100% de-stemmed. Aged 10 months in 44% new Francois Frères and Rousseau French oak barrels. · Lightest in color of the 2009 Pinot Noirs. Beguiling aromas of cherry essence with hints of strawberry, rose petal and spice. Delicious core of medium-weighted black cherry and raspberry flavors impressing the mid palate and carrying over with emphasis on the lengthy finish. Mild dusty tannins and well-honed acidity create a beautifully balanced wine that really draws you back to the glass. A perfect marriage of pedigreed vineyard and impeccable winemaking.

Midwest Wine Guy - Real Honest Wine Reviews and Education

A great thing about most Sauvignon Blanc wines (other than their taste of course) is their price.  This is a stellar example of a top shelf Sauvignon Blanc, and one you should buy.  There.  I said it.  Go buy this wine!  When you put this in your mouth, it feels so lively and fresh that you are hesitant to swallow it because you want to savor the feel.  But once you do taste this, you get a dance of pink and white grapefruit, a lemon lime zest, wet mineral, graphite, honeysuckle and flowers.  Expertly made and the suggested retail on this wine is under $25 US.  I don’t know what the production is on this wine, but I’d get it now with spring just around the corner.  You might scoff at the high score, but this wine is more than deserving!  Amazing.
